Exhibited Works: CAS_04 Parthenon_South_XI_31, CAS_V04 Hellenistic Portrait, CAS_08 Hellenistic Ruler, CAS_V08 Deep Portrait: 12-channel version
Duration: 28.11.2018 – 17.02.2019
Event type: Group show
Curator: Dmitry Bulatov
Organizer: PERMM
Venue: PERMM, Perm, Russia
The exhibition New State of the Living presents a selection of works by Russian and international artists exploring the intersections of contemporary art, technology, and scientific practice. A defining characteristic of the works in this show is their synthesis of artistic disciplines with advanced technical developments, ranging from robotics and computational systems to biomedicine. These creations, however, are not limited to purely scientific or algorithmic processes; they also encompass intuition, metaphor, and conceptual speculation.
The artists included in the exhibition probe the fusion of the “natural” and the “technological,” questioning the traditional boundaries of agency and creativity. Autonomy is not exclusively human, and the works explore emerging hybrid forms where biological, mechanical, and digital entities coexist and interact. By employing metaphors such as “the flow of becoming” and the universal “vital impulse,” the exhibition articulates a vision of life in transformation - a “new state of the living” - that blurs distinctions between the organic and the artificial.
Egor Kraft’s contributions, including the Content Aware Studies series and Hellenistic-inspired portraits, exemplify this approach. By combining machine learning, 3D modeling, and sculptural representation, Kraft’s work interrogates the processes of cultural memory, form, and perception, situating ancient iconography within contemporary computational aesthetics. His projects highlight how technology mediates and reconfigures the boundaries of human experience and biological temporality.
Through these works, the exhibition illustrates the capacity of contemporary art to act as a speculative, investigative practice - one that parallels, critiques, and complements the endeavours of science, technology, and philosophy in understanding life’s evolving complexity.
