Algorithms and Codes. Wisdom in a Calculated World at Fundación Telefónica, Madrid, Spain, curated by Manuela Naveau, examines the increasing presence and influence of algorithms and code in contemporary life. In an era where computational logic governs work, leisure, health, and social interactions, the exhibition questions the assumptions of neutrality, efficiency, and objectivity attributed to these systems. It highlights how algorithmic processes shape perception, decision-making, and cultural production, while prompting reflection on the ethical, social, and philosophical implications of a world governed by data.
Egor Kraft’s Content Aware Studies series contributes to this discourse by exploring the interplay between artificial intelligence, historical memory, and human perception. Using machine-learning algorithms to reconstruct lost or fragmented classical sculptures and friezes, the work exposes the interpretive and quasi-archaeological potential of AI, interrogating how computational systems can generate cultural knowledge and reconfigure our understanding of the past in a data-driven era. Through these works, the exhibition encourages viewers to reflect on the co-existence of human subjectivity and algorithmic authority in shaping contemporary reality.
