Hidden Layers: AI Infrastructures and Hallucinations examines the concealed dimensions of contemporary artificial intelligence culture, focusing on the planetary infrastructures of extraction and computation, the often-invisible human labour behind AI systems, the latent spaces in which culture is compressed and processed, and the phenomenon of machine hallucination. The exhibition approaches these questions through two interconnected perspectives: AI Infrastructures and AI Hallucinations.

Curated by Antonio Somaini with Hannes Bajohr and Sonja Thiel, and developed in dialogue with the France-Berkeley research initiative The Latent Spaces of Culture, the exhibition brings together international artists working at the intersection of contemporary art and machine learning. Their practices make visible the technological, material, social, and ideological layers that normally remain hidden within AI systems.

Hidden Layers is a collaboration between the Department of German and the Worth Ryder Art Gallery at the Department of Art Practice, with additional support and programming involving BAMPFA and other UC Berkeley research and cultural institutions.
