School of Design and Innovation 2024 – International Symposium Series.
This intensive lecture course, held at the China Academy of Art’s expansive Liangzhu Campus, explores the philosophical, artistic, and technological dimensions of emerging computational systems. The campus, a leading center for design and innovation in China, provided a cross-disciplinary environment fostering dialogue between theory, practice, and research.
The course blends visually rich seminars with critical inquiry at the intersection of intermedia art, philosophy of technology, and speculative design research. Participants engage with AI as a technology of automation and algorithmic cognition, alongside peer-to-peer computation systems, decentralized networks, and mixed-reality infrastructures. Topics are approached both technically and through socio-humanitarian, aesthetic, and epistemic perspectives, emphasizing the profound influence of computational advancements on the ways our environments are built, studied, and interpreted.
Students are encouraged to anticipate emerging trends and challenges, develop critical approaches, and experiment with AI, Web3, and mixed-reality technologies. The course aims to cultivate methods for working with, via, about, and for AI, empowering participants to create reflective, speculative, and experimental projects within individual, collaborative, or commissioned frameworks.
