Exhibited Work: Hollow Domain film
Duration: 06.04 – 11.08.2019
Event type: Group show
Curator: Peter Weibel
Organizer: ZKM, Center for Art and Media
Venue: ZKM, Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, Germany
Negative Space revisits the fundamental question of sculpture in contemporary art, extending the investigation first undertaken by the 1986 exhibition Qu'est-ce que la sculpture moderne? at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. The show examines how the perception of sculptural form has evolved from antiquity to the present, moving beyond traditional notions of mass, solidity, and corporeality. Historically, Western sculpture has been closely linked to the body, with statues conceived as solid, self-contained monoliths—positive formations asserting presence in space.
The exhibition challenges this paradigm by highlighting works that explore absence, void, and the relational dimensions of form. Artists investigate the interplay between material and immaterial, presence and absence, and physical and digital space. Egor Kraft’s Hollow Domain contributes a cinematic exploration of these ideas, examining how digital media and algorithmic processes transform sculptural practice, creating spaces that are simultaneously virtual and corporeal. Through such works, Negative Space interrogates the boundaries between sculpture, architecture, and immersive environments, prompting viewers to reconsider the essence of form and its perceptual and conceptual limits.
